It’s official – Melton is home to the best meat pie in the country.

Buddy’s Bakery was awarded Best Plain Meat Pie in the Great Aussie Pie Competition on Tuesday September 9.

The High Street patisserie’s chunky pie was given the nod by The Pie Council – something that baker Sarel Hok was chuffed about.

“I’m very surprised but very happy… I love doing my job and I’m glad melton is home to the best pie” he said.

While Mr Hok was reluctant to reveal his secrets, he had one simple message for aspiring pie makers.

“It’s all about flavour, from the bottom to the top.

“Some people love to eat a good pie with tomato sauce, and that’s fine, but if the pie has great flavour then they don’t need it.”

The award will go at the front of the shop at Buddy’s Bakery for “everyone to see.”

Mr Hok thanked staff, customers, and his wife, Mey Sok, who runs the bakery.

Ms Sok said that word had got out fast and that people were “travelling from across Victoria” to get a taste.

“A lot of customers are driving two to three hours to try it… we are bringing a lot of people to Melton,” she said.

Buddy’s Bakery will receive a $500 major title winner’s cash prize, a new Unox Oven worth $2100, EOI Bakery products worth $1000, a $500 pie pallet, $500 Heinz gift voucher, and 12 month membership to the National Baking Industry Association.
