Melton’s birdlife and bushscapes are the inspiration behind the newest street art in the heart of the town centre.
Notable graffiti artist Phibs is producing the large-scale piece as part of council’s summer of street art series which aims to reduce rates of illegal graffiti in the area.
Phibs’ work has featured on iconic city streets, and international exhibitions and collections, including in the National Gallery of Australia.
His signature style will be woven into the work on the wall of a High Street supermarket and will feature symbolic
imagery of birdlife.
Melton mayor Bob Turner said the mural would be something the whole community could be proud of.
“This wall mural will be our first large-scale street artwork in Melton,” Cr Turner said.
“We’ve seen the evidence that street art can be used to effectively decrease graffiti, crime, as well as create iconic artwork that we can all be proud of.
“This mural will also provide inspiration and motivation to a group of young artists who will be developing a set of murals for the McKenzie Street Laneway in February.”
The finishing touches are being placed on the nine metre street art piece for the public to enjoy.
The program was funded by the state government’s community crime prevention program.
