With the one gesture, Melton West Primary School is honouring its school captains and looking after the planet.
At a ceremony last week, the school planted ornamental pear trees, which will eventually form a canopy around the “arid” school oval.
Wellbeing staff and student support teacher Jeffrey Knolder said they were hoping to inject some greenery and life into the school oval, while commemorating the hard work of school captains.
“School captains do quite a bit during the year,” Mr Knolder said.
“They interview staff, they show visitors around and they’re very active during school activities. This was one way of showing recognition.”
Five trees were planted to honour school captains from 2012 until the present year, and also late classroom teacher Suzanne Conroy.
“How wonderful will it be for the children who’ve contributed to the school to come back years later and see the trees growing,” Mr Knolder said.
This year’s school captains, Nazim and Kaitlyn, said they were excited to be honoured in such an environmentally friendly way.
“We can come back in the future and show our families the trees,” Kaitlyn said.
Nazim agreed: “I’ve done lots of things for the school and to help improve the school. Planting trees also helps the environment.”
