Parents in Melton are being urged to regularly check their child restraints, in an effort to reduce the number of transport related injuries.

Inspections conducted by Kidsafe Victoria found that more than 90% of children’s car seats needed to be adjusted or completely refit.

“Incorrectly installed or used child car restraints significantly increase the risk of a child suffering a serious injury or death in the event of a crash,” Kidsafe CEO Melanie Courtney said.

“No matter how long or short the trip, it is critical to take the time to ensure that your child’s car restraint is correctly installed and adjusted to fit them properly, to keep them safe.”

The inspections were undertaken as part of the ‘Safe Seats, Safe Kids’ program run collaboratively by Kidsafe Victoria and Neighbourhood Houses Victoria.

As part of the initiative, accredited professional child car restraint fitters provide safety checks and free fittings.
