Local facilities in the Moorabool Shire are receiving ongoing support in the wake of severe storms that terrorised the region last year.

The state government will provide an additional $4.76 million in funding to local councils affected by the storms, to support the long-term recovery journey over the next 12 months.

The support comes after hundreds of homes were badly damaged in two storms in 2021, one in June and one in October.

Victorian agriculture minister Mary-Anne Thomas visited Trentham Fire Station on Friday June 10, to check in with locals on progress of the recovery journey.

The fire station was an integral part of recovery efforts following the storm, as it was used as a Local Command Facility in the days after to coordinate response efforts.

The Trentham CFA received support following the incident in the form of a $17,000 generator from the state government, through the Volunteer Emergency Services Equipment program.

The government also previously provided $8.2 million to support local councils in the region with recovery efforts.

The $13.8 million recovery support package announced following the disaster has also provided ongoing recovery support, helping 2,200 Victorians seeking advice, accommodation, insurance, health, wellbeing and financial support.

Ms Thomas said the government would continue to support local families, businesses and communities who were affected by this “unprecedented” event.

“Recovering from a disaster is complex and takes time,” she said.

“We can’t change what these communities have been through, but we are doing what we can to make recovery that little bit easier and build back better and stronger.”
