The call has sounded for a newer generation of returned servicemen and women to band together and support each other.
Melton Returned and Services League launched its young veterans sub group last year for people who served in any part of the military from 1991 – and organisers want more members.
Committee members Stephen Cook and Ben Arthur recognised a need for more support services for their peers and now run the RSL Active program to bring young veterans and their families together to help them transition into civilian life.
“We want to change the image of the RSL to entice the younger servicemen and women out there, who might need support,” Mr Cook said.
Mr Arthur, 37, served in Timor with the 4RAR Commando for six months in 2001.
He said the program is for returned servicemen and women who might feel “alienated and disengaged” from society.
“A lot of people are lost when they return to civilian lifestyle,” he said. “RSL Active gives us a chance to be with like-minded people.
“Some people have mental health issues, physical disabilities and a lot of the guys and women are dealing with something that has not been diagnosed.”
