MY PLACE: Kim Shaw

Fairyologist Kim Shaw talks to Dewi Sherry about her unusual Melton-based business.

What is your connection to Melton?

I am the owner and creative director of Fairy Gardening Australia which is located at Western BACE, Melton South.

How long have you lived/worked in the area?

Fairy Gardening Australia moved to Melton almost a year ago and I have lived in the area for about 10 years.

How long have you worked at Fairy Gardening Australia?

I founded Fairy Gardening Australia seven years ago. Last year I decided to expand my business into wholesale distribution. I discovered Western BACE and felt it was the perfect fit. I have since opened a shop where locals can come and enjoy my fairy garden.

How did you first get involved?

I have been fairy gardening my whole life. As a child, I was always making little houses out of twigs and leaves for my fairy friends. My business is really just an extension of who I am and what I have always loved to do.

What are you passionate about?

People creating magical spaces. It is wonderful to see kids and adults embracing the magic of fairy gardening. The great thing about fairy gardening is that it expands across all age groups and skill levels. It appeals to first-time gardeners, experienced gardeners and everyone in between. It is really exciting to see people who have never had an interest in gardening create green spaces in and around their homes filled with magical delights. It makes my heart happy to be a part of that.

What would people be surprised to know about you?

I’m a certified fairyologist and I have dedicated my life to learning more about fairy folklore and history. I really do believe in fairies! I am also a champion breeder of dust bunnies, mum of three and was a Queen Scout many, many moons ago.

What is the best thing about working in Melton?

The community. Melton has embraced my quirky little shop and been incredibly supportive. The other day a lady told me that she heard about Fairy Gardening Australia from the members of her quilting club. It is wonderful to have the locals talking about what I do and suggesting that their friends visit me!

If you could change anything about the area, what would it be?

I don’t have anything to change about Melton, I think it’s great. All the other businesses around me are very supportive and there is a real sense of community.
