Music across the nation

Wedge Park Primary School students will join with young musicians across Australia this week as part of a nationwide music project.

The Melton West school has been practising since the start of term 3 for the event on November 7, including joining with fellow students at Kurunjang Secondary College to learn the specially written song ‘We Are’.

At 12.30pm on Thursday, participating schools from across Australia will play and sing the song in unison, and school organiser Jennifer Velja said it was an important event to be a part of.

“It’s a government initiative, and we’ve been involved in it for about 12 years now,” Mrs Velja said.

“It’s about music education and highlighting and celebrating music in schools all over Australia. The song was written by school students, and it’s a great opportunity for our kids to do something together with other schools.

“The kids love it. Their enthusiasm and the way they’ve worked together to make this happen has been great to see.”

The event will be held at Wedge Park Primary, and feature the Kurunjang Secondary Rock Band, Wedge Park Primary ukulele students and the primary school’s Year 2 and 3 choir.

“It’s been lots of hard work to get to this point,” Mrs Velja said.

“Music is something that brings people together, and it’s something we can all do at the same time.

“It’s good for our health, and the more our kids learn music the better off they are going to be, and that’s the best thing about this event.”
