Moorabool council has welcomed a new state government plan to involve more country youth in council and community affairs.
Last week, state Youth Affairs Minister Jenny Mikakos invited rural and regional councils to apply for grants of up to $30,000 for initiatives that will help young people take part in civic affairs and council decision-making processes.
The Rural and Regional Local Government Youth Engagement program could create better opportunities for councils to tap into the opinions of young people, the minister said.
“We want to give young Victorians a strong voice in our communities and a say in the future of our state,” Ms Mikakos said. “Young people who feel valued – and are given opportunities to take part in community life – develop important skills, experience and networks in the community.”
Ms Mikakos encouraged councils to submit ideas as funding applications before October 7.
Council chief executive Rob Croxford said it was “vital” that young people be actively engaged in the issues affecting them.
“Council actively sources opportunities for grant funding to support the implementation of key services, programs and events for young people,” Mr Croxford said.
“[We] facilitate the Young Action Group and FReeZa.”
