Cleaners at the Melton Waves leisure centre have been left in the lurch after management sacked them late last week.
Australian Services Union organiser Melissa Wainwright said workers were shocked to receive letters saying they were no longer needed and would be replaced with contract staff.
“To say these workers are shocked is an understatement. To have your employment terminated is bad enough, but to have it done when you aren’t expecting it is something they are really struggling with,” Ms Wainwright said.
“They cannot understand why management would treat them with such disrespect, seeing there was absolutely no consolation regarding a move to use contracted staff.
