Melton suburbs get thumbs up

Five thousand Melton addresses will be changed and 11 new suburbs established following state government approval of the new suburbs’ boundaries and names.

Most of the new suburbs – Harkness, Weir Views, Cobblebank, Strathtulloh, Thornhill Park, Grangefields, Bonnie Brook, Aintree, Fieldstone, Fraser and Deanside – will be established in the growth corridor between the Melton township and the eastern corridor, while the boundaries of some existing suburbs will be amended.

Melton South, Melton West, Mount Cottrell, Plumpton, Rockbank and Toolern Vale will be reduced in size, while Truganina will be increased.

The changes are necessary to ensure population growth doesn’t push suburb densities beyond 20,000 residents.

Melton mayor Sophie Ramsey said the 11 new suburbs were great news for the municipality.

“Council now has the opportunity to establish great community hubs that people aspire to live in and foster a real sense of belonging across the city,” Cr Ramsey said.

“Residents can rest assured that we will be in touch to help guide them through the transition from old suburb to new and work towards alleviating any concerns they may have during the change-over period.”

The state government’s Office of Geographic Names approved the new suburbs earlier this month, publishing suburb boundaries in theVictorian Government Gazette on Thursday, February 9.

Changes are expected to come into effect about the middle of this year.

The new suburb names were suggested by the suburb naming advisory committee, which consists of councillors, council officers and community leaders, following extensive community consultation three years ago.

There were 35 shortlisted options, with the committee settling on the 11 approved names based on community feedback and historical significance.

Melton council is expected to write to affected residents and businesses in coming months to inform them of the changes and provide advice on who to inform about their address changes.
