The junior girls rugby team at Melton Secondary College is a force to be reckoned with.
The 13-player team was formed only last year, but they’ve already smashed glass ceilings. They were crowned state champions in the Melbourne Storm Robbie Kearns Shield competition last year and finished second this year despite numerous setbacks.
School sports co-ordinator Gerard Darcy said he was proud of the girls who were achieving outstanding things while having fun.
“This year we couldn’t train as much, we lost a few girls and it was a much stronger competition than last year,” Mr Darcy said. “But the girls fought hard and came runners-up. They were hoping to win, but to get second in the state is a wonderful achievement.”
While still a relatively new sport at the school, rugby is quickly gaining a stronghold, Mr Darcy said.
He said the school had some of the strongest rugby teams in the state, with seven students already having received rugby scholarships at sports schools.
