Melton remains a burglary target

Melton, Kurunjang and Toolern Vale are among the most burgled suburbs in Melbourne, according to new research from the RACV.
The insurance company’s annual burglary statistics report revealed the burglary rate across the suburbs is one in 60 homes, the ninth highest rate in Melbourne.
The number was an improvement on last year’s one in 45 homes, but still well above the state average of one in 91 homes.
Brookfield, Exford, Eynesbury and Melton South also had a burglary rate of one in 60 homes this year.
The news was more positive across the region.
The 3340 postcode, which includes Bacchus Marsh, Darley and Parwan, had a burglary rate of just one in 140 homes, better than the rate of one in 107 homes in 2018.
The 3335 postcode, which includes growing, but smaller suburbs Rockbank and Plumpton, improved from one in six homes to one in 12 in the past 12 months.
RACV general manager, Raymond Orre said there are a number of steps the community can take to lower the risk of burglary.
“Until crime rates are at zero, there is still reason for concern and more importantly, action,” he said.
“We found that one in five people surveyed … have sophisticated home security solutions but rarely or never keep them activated or in working order.
“Regular checks and system tests are a simple a way to maintain peace of mind in the home.”
He said strong community also plays a strong role.
“Positively, one in five people already believethat their neighbours look out for them, and in turn, they look out for their neighbours.
