Designated drivers can look forward to star treatment at 11 Melton pubs and restaurants if they join a Melton police and council program to reduce drink-driving.
Soft drinks throughout the night will be free for people who identify themselves as designated drivers for two or more others.
Senior Constable Holly Gibson, of the Melton highway patrol, said drink-driving was a major problem, especially at this time of year.
She said police hoped the new initiative could help tackle the problem.
“Obviously, this time of year, we see an increase in alcohol consumption across the board, and we’re trying to promote people being able to do that but also allow them to get home safely, lowering the road trauma,” Senior Constable Gibson said.
Q Lounge owner Tony Gauci said he was pleased to join an initiative that allowed designated drivers to still have fun and be rewarded.
“We’re just trying to do anything we can to help stop drink-driving,” Mr Gauci said. “And to allow people to come out, have a soft drink – not just sit there – and also be a part of the fun.”
