For the past seven years, Lyn Duffy has called the Melton South Tennis Club her second home and its members her second family.
After her three children started tennis lessons there, Mrs Duffy instantly fell in love with the sport and club.
She’s been volunteering ever since.
For all her hard work, Mrs Duffy was recognised at a Tennis Australia event where she was awarded a Volunteer Achievement Award.
“I honestly didn’t think my name was going to be called out,” Mrs Duffy says. “I was stunned, shocked, surprised – all of the above.”
As she walked up to get her award, Mrs Duffy reminded herself not to trip over in a room filled with hundreds of people.
Her son, at the awards with her, was ecstatic. Her family, watching the awards night from a live stream, was beaming with pride.
“I don’t do it for the recognition but it’s nice to be recognised,” she says.
“I volunteer to help around at the place, to keep things go smoothly.
I don’t like to sit back and let everyone else do the work.”
Mrs Duffy is volunteering as treasurer at the club but members often see her tidying up the place and picking up rubbish. She’s also been known to swing a racquet in her spare time.
“I love playing tennis,” she said.
