Construction has started on a multimillion dollar health hub at Melton.
Health Minister Jill Hennessy and Melton MP Don Nardella last month ‘turned the first sod’ as works began on the new $21 million Melton Health and Community Services centre on Barries Road.
Djerriwarrh Health Services, Melbourne Health-Midwest Area Mental Health Service, MacKillop Family Services, cohealth and Odyssey House Victoria will service the new centre with programs including Aboriginal health, chronic disease prevention, and mental health, drug and alcohol services.
Prior to the 2014 state election, the Liberal government had announced it would commit $14 million for the centre, with construction due to be finished this year.
When elected, the Labor government said it would honour this commitment, providing $14 million towards the health hub, with health service providers contributing the remaining $7 million.
The health hub will have consulting suites, group meeting rooms, a gym, kitchen, staff work areas and a mental health tribunal room.
It is expected to finish by April next year.
Mr Nardella said bringing together a range of health and welfare providers under one roof would ensure services are better co-ordinated, more efficient and easier to access.
Ms Hennessy said the works are important in one of the state’s “booming growth corridors”, where demand for timely health care is set to soar.
