A Melton father and son duo took out the two Australian titles last week at the Australian V8 Superboat Unlimited Championship.

Melton resident and superboat world champion Phonsy Mullan claimed an eighth Australian title while his son Bastian Mullan won his first ever Australian title.

The competition was held in the South Australian township of Keith and hosted a fierce race for first place in the Unlimited Superboat contest.

Mr Mullan said it was amazing to win one title and even better to win two.

“Two Melton boys won two out of the three Australian titles on offer, it’s pretty special,” he said.

“It was an amazing effort, [my son] drove very well and we got it done as a team.”

Mr Mullan said the competition was a tight race for first place and any minor error could have lost him the chance for the crown.

“If you make a mistake, you’re simply eliminated, so there was that pressure,” he said.

The father and son pair are the first in the country to win Australian titles in the same year.

“It was definitely a bit of a family event, we also had my youngest son there who races as well,” Mr Mullan said.

The world champion said the end of the 2021 season didn’t mean there was any time for rest, with the 2022 season commencing in four months and the next world championship event expected to occur in America next year.

“We’re already planning what we’ll do boat-wise and engine-wise to keep our competition at bay,” Mr Mullan said.
