Mohammed Haque and his family fell in love with Australia the moment they visited this great southern land.

After arriving from Bangladesh on his wife’s student visa in 2009, the Haques started carving out a bit of the Australian dream for themselves.

The pinnacle of that dream was to become Australian citizens, which they did on Australia Day this year.

The Haques were among 172 Melton residents who received their citizenship certificates at a ceremony on January 26.

“We liked it here because of the living standards, and lifestyle and security,” Mr Haque said.

“It’s better for my kids, and schools here are much better.”

Asked how Victoria compared with his home town, Mr Haque said: “Obviously better, particularly Melbourne.”

Mr Haque said last week was more than a celebration of their citizenship certificates … they celebrated their sometimes stressful road to citizenship and the future they can now offer their children.

“I’m so proud to call myself Australian,” he said.
