A group of Melton women tired of life’s banality and lusting for good chats over a cup of tea started the Country Women’s Association Melton Day branch in 1938.
The branch proved to be a serious force in the community. Members fought hard for the Melton Waves Leisure Centre, kindergartens, historical society, maternal child health nurses and the first hard-waste rubbish collection in the municipality.
Last Thursday, the branch celebrated its 80th birthday.
Secretary Ida Cochrane said the branch, like all other CWA branches, was affiliated with the Associated Country Women of the World and thus helped females all around the globe.
“One of the latest things we did was knitting for the soldiers in Afghanistan,” Mrs Cochrane said.
“We made little teddies for the Melton maternal child health nurse to hand to young children.”
Ms Cochrane said the branch members were “very proud” to have made it to 80.
“Being involved with the CWA is something that gets into your blood,” she said.
