Construction on the $3.2 million redevelopment of Melton council’s aged care services started this morning.
Extra office and meeting spaces, as well as additional indoor program and activity areas for elderly residents will be built on the vacant site adjacent to the existing building on McKenzie Street.
The state government contributed $1.8 million through the Interface Growth Fund towards the redevelopment of the facility.
Melton mayor Kathy Majdlik said the project was important for the municipality’s elderly residents and their carers.
“I’m sure… [you] are well aware of how rapidly our municipality is growing and how crucial it is that council continues to provide infrastructure and services to assit new and exsitign residents to enjoy happy, healthy and fulfilled lives,” Ms Majdlik said.
“This new building is an essential component in the City of Melton’s strategic approach to providing lifelong support to residents.”
Melton MP Don Nardella reiterated the importance of projects that helped bring the town’s elderly residents out of isolation, and connect them with the community.
“These things are important for our people and society,” Mr Nardella said. “[We’re about] helping people when they’re isolated and need these types of facilities.”
The increased capacity of the aged care services will help council meet the growing needs of older people in the community.
