One in four pregnancies in Australia end in miscarriage. And another 3000 babies are either stillborn or die shortly after birth.
Kurunjang woman Melanie Farrugia wants to do something for families devastated by the loss of their hopes and dreams.
Ms Farrugia says she has a fear of flying, but is prepared to take the plunge – literally – and skydive to raise money for Sands. Sands (an acronym for stillbirth and neonatal death) is a not-for-profit organisation that provides support and information to parents, families and healthcare professionals.
“I have a phobia of flying, but this is a charity close to a lot of people’s hearts, including mine,” Ms Farrugia says.
“So I am stepping out of my comfort zone in memory of a lot of friends’ lost babies.”
Miscarriages, stillbirths and newborn deaths are still taboo topics, Ms Farrugia says.
She hopes this will eventually change as it’s important for others to talk about how they feel and to know they’re not alone.
“I am hoping to make a difference, and with the help of others, raise some funds so that Sands can continue to support parents at such a devastating time.”
Ms Farrugia will be hosting a ladies’ night on Friday, October 28, 6.30-10.30pm, and a family market day on Sunday, October 30, 11am-4pm, at Melton Tabcorp Park.
All money raised through the raffles at the events will go to Sands.
