Ronald and Lesley Sands’ love story started in the summer ’49.

Countless family holidays, a trip to the US, four children, 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren later, the Melton couple celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary at a low-key lunch last week.

The Sands married on a fine Melbourne Cup Day, November 7, in 1950.

“She was really handsome – she still is,” Ronald says of his wife.

“He was very, very handsome,” Lesley says.

Both say there were highs and lows during their relationship but they understood commitment.

“You’ve got to give and take,” Mrs Sands says. “There aren’t any secrets to a long-lasting relationship. Respect to each other, and everyone else, is very important.”

The couple’s favourite pastime is a day out at the Melton RSL club once a week.
