Living below the line to tackle poverty

When Catherine Baud lives on under $2 a day next week, her thoughts will be with the millions of people around the globe living in poverty.

The rumbling stomach, cravings and hunger will all be bearable compared with what others go through every day of their lives, the Darley 19-year-old says.

Just as in the past two years, Ms Baud will take part in the Live Below the Line campaign to raise money for schools in Cambodia, Timor-Leste and Papua New Guinea, and to help raise awareness about extreme poverty.

Ms Baud studies international development at the Australian Catholic University and one day hopes to work for a non-government organisation tackling global poverty.

“Poverty is unjust,” Ms Baud said. “It’s a terrible thing and it shouldn’t be happening – people shouldn’t be living like that in the 21st century.”

She’ll be living off pasta, rice, bread and oats from May 2 to 6 and – if she’s lucky – a piece of fruit and vegetable.

But it’s sugar cravings that Ms Baud has struggled with previously.

“This year I’m going to get a packet of biscuits to curb those cravings,” she says.
