Level crossing removals continue to ease traffic

Traffic conditions have returned to normal along Robinsons Road in Deer Park thanks to the opening of a new road underpass as part of the state government’s Level Crossing Removal Project.

The opening of the new underpass increased the number of level crossings removed to 66, with other recent level crossing removals including Fitzgerald Road in Ardeer and Ferguson Street in Williamstown.

Crews worked around the clock at Robinsons Road on asphalting, road resurfacing and line marking during a 10-day road closure to ensure the road could open to traffic months ahead of schedule.

During the project, crews excavated more than 60,000 cubic metres of rock and soil to build the new road underpass and rail bridge, installing 430 tonnes of steel and seven bridge beams weighing 80 tonnes each.

Transport Infrastructure Minister Jacinta Allan said the Robinsons Road level crossing removal would enable improved connections across the community.

“Another level crossing is now gone in Melbourne’s booming west, months ahead of schedule improving safety and reliability whether you’re travelling by foot, road or rail.”

Over the coming months, level crossing removal works would continue at the nearby Mt Derrimut Road level crossing, with the project on track to be completed by 2024, marking the final level crossing on the Geelong and Ballarat line between Deer Park and Melbourne to be removed.
