Laughing kookaburras and whistling kites will be among Melton’s feathered wildlife to feature in an upcoming photography exhibition.

Photographer Nora Peters’ latest exhibition coincides with National Bird Week, from October 23, and will focus on wild birds around Melton, as well as other native wildlife.

Peters took up photography at just three years of age after she was given a black-and-white Ilford camera and a few rolls of film by her father.

The photgrapher recalls her early analogue photography.

“It didn’t allow a second chance at getting a shot,” Peters said.

“I had to wait for the processing and printing to see the images, whereas with digital I can capture multiple shots and pick the best on the computer.”

Peters said that capturing the scaly-breasted lorikeet on camera was a highlight.

“It’s one of the best that I have photographed this year,” she said. “They don’t appear too often around Melton – usually found in the company of rainbow lorikeets.”

Her advice to budding wildlife photographers and bird watchers is to “have lots of patience and get as close as possible without alarming the subject”.

The collection of images will be on display at Melton Library and Learning Hub during National Bird Week.
