Kryal Castle resident knight Phillip Leitch and his steed, Valiant, have been sharpening their skills for this weekend’s horse archery tournament.

About 15 archers from around the state will join them for the Medieval Horse Sports Australia event at the castle.

Horse archery instructor Katrina Kruse, a pioneer of the sport in Australia, said the event would be an opportunity for spectators to learn about the modern version of this medieval sport.

“Accuracy and being able to load the arrow while riding are the greatest challenges,” Kruse said. “The sport in Australia generally attracts women because majority of the equestrian industry is flooded with women, but there will be men in the mix this weekend.

“Kryal Castle is a smaller arena than others we hold competitions at but there will still be plenty of challenges.”

The horse archery event will start at 9am in the main arena on Saturday and continue on Sunday.
