Victorian Governor Linda Dessau AC has proclaimed His Majesty King Charles III as the new Sovereign of Australia at a ceremony at Government House.
A statement from the Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews said it follows His Majesty’s accession being proclaimed in the United Kingdom yesterday and his proclamation as the new Sovereign of Australia by the Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, David Hurley AC DSC (Retd).
“The proclamation was jointly signed by the governor, the premier, the chief justice, the president of the Legislative council and the speaker of the Legislative assembly,” the statement said.
“King Charles III has visited Victoria on many occasions. His first trip to the state was an extended one in 1966, when His Majesty spent two terms studying at Geelong Grammar School’s Timbertop Campus.
“Most recently King Charles III visited Victoria in 2012 with Her Royal Highness The Queen Consort, as part of The Late Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.”
As a mark of respect for The Queen’s death, Victorian Parliament will adjourn for one week and return to sit on Tuesday, September 20 and Wednesday, September 21.
