Kids let parents play

Late-night training, early-morning matches, long-distance travel – the efforts of parents generally go unnoticed during footy season.

But it’s adults, as well as children, who keep Diggers Rest Junior Netball and Football Club alive.

And come next month, the adults can unwind, sip on drinks and mingle with others at the club’s annual Trivia Night, while raising money for the club.

Event co-organiser Jackie Downing said the trivia night was solely about the adults.

“Week by week, it’s all about the kids, and this trivia night is an opportunity for the adults to bond,” she said. “It’s about developing a football club that’s united.”

Club members want to raise enough money to buy new gear and training equipment. Ms Downing said they would put some money towards end-of-year presentation days.

“Without the money, it just means kids are going to miss out,” Ms Downing said. “We’re competing, like any other organisation, against local clubs. We’ve got a shortage of kids and what we need to do is create an environment where kids want to come.”

The trivia night will be held on Saturday, July 25, from 7.30pm at the Diggers Rest Community Hall, Plumpton Road, Diggers Rest. Tickets cost $10.
