Students at Arnold’s Creek Primary School found a creative way to spread the word about cyber safety.
Year 3 and 4 pupils teamed up with author Emma Bowd to learn how to be “real” authors as part of a writers in residence program run by youth literacy agency Ardoch.
The pupils helped to write and produce
Freddie the Famous Ferret, a story about a social media superstar and a horse named Petey Pan who face cyber safety issues and are able to resolve them together to become the best of friends.
Teacher Karen Calleja said that writing had been a major focus of Arnolds Creek Primary School this year.
“We wanted to develop an experience where children could be authors,” Ms Calleja said.
“Students investigated the importance of being cyber safe and the role we all play in being cyberwise.
“The kids worked with Emma over three months going through the writer’s process including planning, drafting, revising and editing. Students developed all the illustrations for the book as well.”
She said the aim was to inspire the children to write and gain the confidence to experiment with their writing.
“We hope that perhaps they will become famous authors themselves in the future,” Ms Calleja said.
The book is now on the shelves at the Melton library.
