Joint health service talks begin

Community consultation on a potential amalgamation of health services in the west has begun, however a final decision is still months away.
Discussions between Western Health and Djerriwarrh Health about the potential amalgamation began in December, when it was announced that Western Health would run the future Melton Hospital.
Under the Health Services Act, any amalgamation would be voluntary, require agreement from both boards and need to demonstrate benefit to the community.
A community engagement process on the amalgamation began on February 10, with the Better Health for the West website launched to give residents a chance to voice concerns and ask questions about the proposal.
So far the consultation has included staff and senior leaders from both health services, hospital and health service support and advisory groups, and fundraising groups that support the health services, such as the Bacchus Marsh Ladies Auxiliary.
Western Health and Djerriwarrh Health Services cater for the healthcare needs of 985,000 people. Together, they employ more than 7600 people across 13 campuses and sites.
The two health services released a joint statement in December, saying it was important to ensure the west was getting the best possible health care.
“The [Melton Hospital] announcement opens the way for a wider examination of the future of healthcare needs of Melbourne’s west,” the statement said.
“Given this major development in the two catchments, and following four years of close partnership between the services, the Western Health board and Djerriwarrh Health Service’s administrator have agreed to explore the best possible options and opportunities for healthcare in Melbourne’s west.
“Western Health and Djerriwarrh already share services, have overlapping boundaries and are increasingly interdependent. Increasing collaboration will better serve the people of Melbourne’s western growth corridor.”
A report on the amalgamation will be submitted to the boards of both health services by April at the earliest. If the boards agree to the amalgamation, a report will be presented to the Department of Health and Human Services.
