Island-style party time

An Island outlook ruled at Melton Secondary College last week in honour of the school’s Pacific students.

The Pasifika Week, lead by the VCAL students, celebrated Samoan, Tongan, Hawaiian and Fijian culture.

Groups from each island performed traditional song and dance to kick off the festivities and parents helped to prepare and cook food on a traditional umu – a Polynesian earth oven using hot rocks.

Supervising teacher Daniel Taylor said the week was an opportunity to celebrate diversity.

“The school hosts a multicultural week every year, but this year we decided to turn it into Pasifika Week because of the large number of pacific students we have.

“It was about bringing awareness and opening people’s minds to the different cultures in our school community and uniting the students.

“The effort and commitment shown by the students in organising the week blew me away.

“They did it all themselves and were practising after school and during holidays.”
