More than 1500 people are expected to head to the Greendale Country Pub on Australia Day for its annual woodchop competition.

Pub owners Greg and Karen Popple say the woodchop, now in its fourth year, started with about 300 participants and now attracts people from across Victoria.

“We started it up because our logo is a wood saw and we had a local woodchopper down here, so we thought this would be a fun way to raise some money,” Mrs Popple said,

“It’s really grown in such a short time and it’s a great family day for the community.

“The CFA guys bring their fire truck down and put on a huge barbecue and we have live music, bucking-bull rides, stalls, food and drinks all day.

“All the money raised is donated to the Greendale CFA and the rest gets filtered into the community.”

The pub’s woodchop championship runs from 11am to 5pm with winners receiving prizes and one taking the coveted woodchop title. Details on Facebook: on.fb.me/1PexiS9.
