Melton and Bacchus Marsh are to be offered education workshops aimed at helping families support loved ones battling ice addiction.
Drug and alcohol centres Turning Point, Self Help Addiction Resource Centre and Bouverie Centre have developed the workshops, ‘Breakthrough: ice education for families’, to help people recognise when a family member has an ice problem.
Participants will be shown how to encourage the affected person to get treatment and support them through their recovery.
The workshops, funded through the state government’s Ice Action Plan, will be held in seven suburbs by the end of the year with more scheduled for next year.
Turning Point director Dan Lubman said the collaborative project was an opportunity to work collectively to help reduce the harm associated with ice use.
“This program aims to provide an insight into what ice is, how it affects people and how to support family members into treatment,” he said.
The Melton workshop will be held at Melton library, 31 McKenzie Street, from 1-5pm on Friday, November 27.
The Bacchus Marsh workshop will be at The Laurels, 229 Main Street, from 1-5pm on Sunday, December 6 .
State Mental Health Minister Martin Foley invited families to attend.
