A young basketballer on a mission to pass on her love of the sport needs Melton’s help.

Emily Attard started the Specialist Hoops holiday program for children with disabilities at Melton Recreation Reserve last year.

She hopes to run the program again this year, incorporating weekly basketball clinics.

The 17-year-old said basketball was her passion and she hoped the community would help to expand the program through an online crowdfunding campaign which has already raised $330 towards running costs.

Emily has been playing basketball for more than a decade and is also a referee for junior basketball grades. She said she came up with the idea to organise an “all-abilities” basketball camp last year so youngsters could learn to play in an organised, safe environment.

“I joined the reffing community at Melton basketball and I want to give back to the community as I’ve had so much enjoyment from playing this game,” she said.

“I hope the children gain basic fundamental skills and, more importantly, fun and laughter through the game of basketball.”
