Hoon drivers cause concern

Residents who live on Scott Street in Melton are concerned about their safety due to hoons who use the street to speed down.

The road is in an area with busy traffic, surrounded by High Street, Coburns Road and Centenary Avenue.

Kathy Grudzien, who has been living on the street for seven years, is concerned for her and her family’s safety.

“You get so terrified they’re going to lose control and plough into our fence,” she said.

Ms Grudzien described ploughs of smoke from car tyres reaching the inside of her house, and hearing the screeching of tyres while hanging up washing in her backyard.

“It’s just horrible,” she said.

The street has a small block of shops, which includes a doctors clinic and a small park.

But Ms Grudzien is planning to start a petition calling on Melton council to install more speed reducing measures.

Council community planning manager Elyse Rider said it worked closely with Victoria Police to implement measures to reduce dangerous driving.

“This can include anything from education programs to additional police patrols, or council installing speed bumps, depending on the circumstances.

“We encourage anyone who witnesses hoon driving to report it to Victoria Police or Crime Stoppers.”
