When Australian troops landed on the Gallipoli peninsula 102 years ago they couldn’t have imagined how costly the war would be.
More than 141,000 Allied troops were wounded and more than 44,000 died by the time the site was evacuated in 1916. And that’s why it’s important to remember, reflect and commemorate, Bacchus Marsh RSL president Cherrison Lawton says.
“Their lives need to count. If we don’t remember the things of the past, we can easily be repeating them. We are such a privileged country but it has come at a great cost.”
Hundreds and thousands of Australians will attend the dawn services and marches today, including Rockbank Primary School captains Jack and Kendra and World War II veteran Allan Godfrey (pictured).
