Headspace Melton is seeking young people passionate about mental health to become members of their Youth Advocacy Group (YAG).

YAG members are volunteers aged 16 to 25 that work with Headspace Melton’s Community Awareness officer on a broad range of projects that aim to help improve their service for young people, engage with the community to chat about mental health, and connect like-minded young people with one another to build social wellbeing.

Phoenix Crouch became a YAG volunteer at the end of 2019 because they wanted to expand their knowledge of the community and ways to help young people with mental health.

In their time with YAG Phoenix has worked on a community zine, a queer radio show, and volunteered at a range of events and festivals.

“I love YAG, I love all of the people, I love the friends that I’ve made, I love working with Mel,” they said.

“It’s very fulfilling, it’s very good to be around other people who share similar views, or even different views and learn off of each other… working with other people and working to help other people.

“I’ve learnt so many things I couldn’t even list them… since joining YAG I’ve decided that I want to go into social work myself and community work in the future when I’m ready.”

You are eligible to become a YAG volunteer if You are aged between 16 and 25, have a close connection to Melton, are able to represent the views of a diverse group of young people, can commit to a 12-month membership and have access to a mobile phone or the internet.

Applications for YAG volunteers are open until February 12 and can be made online.
