Greyhounds 4 Rehoming is holding a special open day, providing a fun-filled family event where people can meet furry friends looking for a forever home.
Debbie Brewley is a greyhound racer who launched Greyhounds 4 Rehoming, a program that finds homes for ex-race dogs or their siblings who were never keen on competition.
All animals are available for free and have been desexed, vaccinated and have had their teeth professionally cleaned.
On March 17, the Pentland Hills property will open to visitors from 11.30am to 3pm, with a parade of about 20 dogs up for adoption, and there’ll also be free lunch and entertainment including facepainting, balloon animals, showbags and market stalls.
“[When greyhounds begin racing training], Some love it, they come out of the box like a shotgun and run all the way to the finishing line,” she said.
“Some don’t, they stay in the box or stop half way and run back. These ones are the ones that will be on show at the Adoption Day. They will be as young as 18 months of age, and because they have had no experience with the outside world, they excel as pets.”
Ms Brewley has spent her whole life around greyhounds, and got into rehoming dogs herself after seeing other services struggle with demand, leading to dogs waiting in kennels for long periods while they wait for things like desexing and then rehoming.
“I have already rehomed 18 of other people’s dogs on my own, and there isn’t one
family that I am not in contact with. They send me photos weekly of their hounds
and happiness that the dog is bringing to their homes,” she said.
“It’s all about the welfare of the dog, is my motto, and always will be.”
