Hands up for handiwork at Melton Secondary College

A Hands on Learning event at Staughton College is encouraging students to get creative. Students will start work on a pizza oven soon but are in the process of completing a mosaic couch.

Twenty Melton Secondary College students have taken learning out of the classroom and into their own hands.

As part of a new Hands on Learning (HOL) initiative at the school, students take part in building projects around the school grounds and in the community.

The school’s HOL teacher, Robyn Bewley, said the teenagers were working on a mosaic couch, and hope to start building a pizza oven soon.

“It gives students the opportunity to do more with their hands and get hands-on skills,” Ms Bewley says.

“All students learn differently … and this program allows students to be more engaged when they get back into the classroom.”

Ms Bewley says the students would like to work with local community groups. Anyone interested can contact the school.
