Moorabool council will begin offering its residents a green-bin service in the new year in a bid to reduce landfill.
Waste services company KG Coy & Sons was awarded the contract for the collection, removal and disposal of greenwaste at Moorabool council’s September 14 meeting.
The service will cost each household $80 to $100 a year, depending on take-up rates, plus the cost of a new bin. The fee will be added to annual rates notices.
Moorabool council infrastructure manager Phil Jeffrey says the service will start in January. The greenwaste will be collected fortnightly and taken to a composting facility at Mount Wallace to be processed for landscaping and agricultural purposes.
“About 15 to 20 per cent of kerbside garbage is made up of garden organics so the introduction of this new service is expected to divert up to 1000 tonnes from landfill each year,” Mr Jeffrey said.
“Many environmental and economic benefits can be gained and we encourage residents to take up the service.”
Earlier this year, following community consultation, Moorabool councillors voted in favour of providing the green-bin service to urban areas of the shire on a trial basis. Council officers will notify eligible residents in late October.
Moorabool Environment Group president Ben Courtice said he hoped this new service could make a “big difference” to the amount of waste going to landfill.
