Aboriginal Victorians in Melton seeking to get into more sport and active recreation may be able to access government grants through the next round of the Aboriginal Sport Participation Grant Program.

On Monday, February 20 Melton MP Steve McGhie encouraged the Victorian Aboriginal community to apply for grants of up to $1500 for teams to participate in state-wide or national sport carnivals, grants of

up to $1000 towards team uniforms and sporting equipment and up to $250 per individual, for the purchase of sporting uniforms and equipment as well as grants of up to $750 for travel and accommodation expenses.

Through the program the state government has provided more than $290,000 across 270 grants to support Aboriginal community run organisations, clubs and individuals across Victoria since 2020.

Applications for funding are open until 7 March 2023.

Mr McGhie said the Victorian Government’s Aboriginal Sport Participation Grant Program is giving Melton Aboriginal and community sports “the support they need to grow their ranks and go next level”.

“I encourage more community-based sporting clubs, Aboriginal organisations, local participants, volunteers and passionate communities to take advantage of this opportunity to nurture and launch the careers of our next generation of Aboriginal champions,” he said.
