Year 12 students across the state have made it to the end of their highschool tenures, and in the past week have received their ATAR results.

Nathan Furtado of Catholic Regional College Melton achieved a stellar score of 93.7.

He said it was “really surreal” opening up his laptop in the morning with his family around him.

“It was a lot higher than I thought I would get so I’m really happy with the freedom to get into anywhere I want,” he said.

Mr Furtado was balancing responsibilities around his studies, including work and his role as school captain.

He said he continued to enjoy his hobbies outside of school, but they were things that intersected with his engineering interests like lego and animation.

“It was important to me to find a good balance between work and school. I made sure all of the extra curricular activities I was involved in were things that were pushing me to work harder,” he said.

For study advice for future year 12 students, Mr Furtado said he found it helpful to understand the broader concepts before the finer details.

“Focus on understanding things, having a good understanding of concepts and of the world around you is more important than specific statistics for an exam. I’m finding that especially now as I’m going into things outside school,” he said.

Catholic Regional College Melton Principal Marlene Jorgensen said she’s proud of all their students.

“VCAL students, for setting themselves up with future employment pathways, and the VCE result is reflective of consistent hard work over the two years of year 11 and 12,” she said.

“Nathan, especially was the school captain, so well done to him for his time management and balancing all of his responsibilities.”
