A Melton historian will uncover mysteries behind some of the municipality’s oldest gravestones as part of this month’s Heritage Festival.
Judith Bilszta will guide two tours of Melton Cemetery, this Friday and Sunday.
Ms Bilszta, who has conducted a number of talks on Melton cemetery, said she wanted
to emphasise the significance of pioneer
graves.
“The cemetery was opened in 1861 following a big appeal from the town, because people at that stage were being taken to the city to be buried or they were being buried on private land,” she said.
“There are significant graves there that should be brought to people’s attention because we must honour those of the past who contributed so much to the development of the town, the district, the shire.
“We’re inclined to forget that people did make a very significant path for the development of the town.
“The Melton cemetery now has been completely revised since about the year 2000 … that opened up all the areas of the cemetery which were not used, and most of it is now
full.”
There are still places available for the Sunday (April 29) tour, which will run from 11am to noon. Booking are essential.
