For the love of metal

By Ewen McRae

Adam Gadsby was first drawn to the high octane world of heavy metal music in his childhood, and he’s now been sharing his love on the local airwaves for more than a year.

Since he first heard Iron Maiden’s ‘Number of the Beast’ album as a kid, heavy music has been in his blood.

“That album started to introduce me to music of that sort and the world of metal music,” Mr Gadsby said.

“I went to a Kiss concert when I was five, and I don’t remember much but I do remember the power up on stage and there was something about it that just grabbed me.

“From there I started drumming a bit, and listening to the technically brilliant work of those early metal artists. So as a kid it just stood out.

“Those old school artists, like Metallica and Iron Maiden, are still probably my favourite, but I’ve come to love some of the modern ones like Lamb of God and Disturbed as well, and the radio show has helped me discover lots of new artists.”

The Darley man broadcasts a regular heavy metal show on community station Apple 98.5FM, and is one of the few shows still broadcasting throughout the coronavirus pandemic.

He said the show was a way of bringing people together through their mutual love of metal, with the community even more important at times like this

“Initially I wasn’t sure there was much of a metal community locally, but it turns out there is,” Mr Gadsby said.

“Everyone’s pretty stoked that the show is still happening live, and the metal community is like a family so it’s great that we can still come together and share in the music.

“We’re a different from most other genres, but we’re all brothers and sisters in metal and I’ve always loved that ever since I was a kid.”

Metal for the Masses is broadcast at 8pm on 98.5FM.
