Melton’s neighbourhood house network has called on the community to help make the festive season joyous for everyone.
While the holidays are an exciting time for many people, especially children, they can be stressful for families struggling to make ends meet.
Non-perishable food items will be collected at Melton and Caroline Springs libraries this month to be distributed through the Melton Combined Churches emergency food service.
Food parcels will be distributed in the lead-up to the holidays.
Melton mayor Kathy Majdlik said donations to the food drive were always “greatly appreciated” by people doing it tough.
“We have a number of local families who regularly use the Melton Combined Churches emergency food service,” she said.
“The spirit of the festive season is all about goodwill towards your neighbours so we encourage everyone to buy an item or two of non-perishable food that will be given to those less fortunate.”
The most requested donations are for jars of jam, vegemite, peanut butter, pasta sauce, sugar, cake mixes and rice.
Gluten and lactose-free foods are particularly welcome.
