Fire closes creek centre

Arnolds Creek Community Centre

Police are investigating a fire that destroyed part of the Arnolds Creek Community Centre building in Melton last week.

Firefighters called to the centre on September 3 were able to contain the blaze to the storeroom and one of the community rooms.

Maternal and child health services and kinder programs at Arnolds Creek Community Centre were cancelled the following day.

Melton mayor Sophie Ramsey said she was disappointed the facility would not be available for community members to use until the damage was repaired.

“We are incredibly disappointed this has occurred at one of our community facilities,” Cr Ramsey said.

“We are urging anyone who may have seen anything to contact their local police station or Crime Stoppers.”

Community groups who use the rooms were assisted with alternative arrangements.

Cr Ramsey said Melton council was still determining the extent of the damage, but she anticipated the community room and storeroom would not be accessible before eight to 12 weeks at the earliest.
