Moorabool residents are being invited to have their say on council’s planned revised memorials policy.
The current policy was adopted three years ago to assess and manage requests by people wanting to install memorials in public places. It’s open for comment in the next four weeks, with council set to adopt the revised policy at next month’s council meeting.
In a report presented at last week’s council meeting, officers said the aim of the draft revised policy was to outline the types of memorials that will be considered; provide an application and approval process; and determine the responsibility for costs and maintenance.
The draft policy includes a 10-step process for people wanting to erect memorials, including requests in writing being made to the chief executive officer and that memorials be relevant to the Moorabool community.
The applicant will need to cover the cost of building and installing a memorial, with council covering “ordinary” maintenance costs.
The draft policy covers requests to install park furniture, garden, art works, artefacts, trees, stone or etched pavings. It also includes indoor memorials and may also include donations to build memorial facilities. Temporary roadside memorials, such as floral tributes, are exempt from the policy.
The draft policy can be found online, at Moorabool council’s customer service locations and the Ballan and Lerderderg libraries.
