Fatality on Western Freeway

UPDATE: A 21-year-old Ballan man has died following a serious collision involving a truck and a car on the Western Freeway.

The truck was travelling towards Ballarat in the left lane, with a Ford sedan travelling next to it in the middle lane just before Tuesday afternoon.

Police say the driver of the sedan appeared to lose control on a left-sweeping bend, near Pykes Creek in Myrniong, and collided into the rear of the  truck.

Passers-by pulled the 21-year-old Ballan man out of his car as it caught fire. They attempted CPR, but was unable to revive him. He died at the scene.

The driver of the truck, a Horsham man aged in his 50s, was not injured.

Tuesday’s fatality brings the death toll to 156 – 17 more than last year.

All lanes on the Western Freeway have reopened.

 EARLIER: Police media has confirmed all emergency services are on the scene of a serious collision involving a car and a truck near Ballan. The collision occurred just before midday.

VicRoads says all lanes are closed westbound on the Western Freeway near Pykes Creek Reservoir in Ballan.

Delays are building in the area. All motorists are advised to avoid the area. Emergency services are on site and this closure is in the control of Victoria Police. It is not clear when the roads will reopen.

CFA media confirmed three vehicles, including the rescue unit, are en-route to the collision.

A spokeswoman said was person was believed to be trapped.
