Remembering Ajay to save lives

Ajay Psaila’s memory lives on and his legacy touches thousands of families.

Since his death from a car accident in 2012, annual fundraisers in Ajay’s honour have raised more than $30,000 for the Royal Children’s Hospital’s intensive care unit.

Event organiser and family friend Colleen Downie said Melton’s generosity and willingness to help out had been overwhelming.

“The day is now becoming somewhat bigger than Ajay himself,” she said. “We’ve got other families in Melton who’ve lost their children and the day is starting to represent other kids in Melton as well.”

Ms Downie said the Psaila family was glad their nine-year-old boy’s name was being kept alive – and they hoped the money raised at Ajay’s Family Day would help to save lives.

“Mary [Ajay’s mother] never ever, ever wants to see another person go through what she’s gone through,” Ms Downie said. “She believes that money will save another child.”

The event will feature live entertainment, a car show and food will be available. Local businesses will sponsor this year’s event, with PRD Real Estate and Escape Travel donating a $3000 travel voucher for the event’s raffle.

Ajay’s Family Day will be from 10am-5pm on Sunday, February 21, at the Melton Amphitheatre, corner of High and Palmerston streets.
