Melton City Libraries’ annual Short Story Competition is back, giving creatives across the city a chance to tell their story and showcase their talents.
Now in its 18th year, the Short Story Competition is a great opportunity for budding storytellers of all ages to develop their creative skills, have their work reviewed by popular authors, and have a chance to win a share of $3000 in prize money.
This year, Melton City Libraries are excited to welcome a star-studded panel of award-winning writers to judge the local talent, including children’s author Michael Wagner, young adult writer
Amie Kaufman, and novelist Emma Viskic.
And it’s not just for writers – entries can be presented in any format including text, illustration, video, verse, voice, or a combination of any of the above.
Written entries should be no more than 1500 words for entrants under 18, and 3000 words for writers aged 18 and over. Other mediums should take no more than 5 minutes to experience.
Prizes are awarded to the best entries in Junior, Teen and Adult sections, as well as best first-time entries in each category.
The Short Story Competition opened on Monday May, 1 and entries close at midnight on Friday, July 14.
Melton Mayor Lara Carli said the competition is a “fantastic opportunity for creative thinkers to showcase their talents and see their works reviewed by professional authors”.
“However you tell your story, I’m excited to get to share in it,” she said.
Children’s author Michael Wagner said reading stories written by children is “often very reassuring”.
“You realise that no matter how much the world changes, children are just as nice and hopeful as they’ve always been. I find that really heart-warming,” he said.
